The Sand of Light – Qatar 2022

Role
Video Mapping Direction,Content,Animation,Sound Design&Mixing

The theme of the show is guiding lights and navigation. Nomadic people of the Qatari region used the stars as a tool to navigate at night – the Middle East is the birthplace of astronomy.
A falcon made of constellations and stars flies above Qatar, eventually transforming into a football, and all the stars are descending on Qatar and the Lusail Stadium – an allegory for one of the most important sports events of the world travelling to the Middle East for the first time, and the story of teams and fans finding their way to Qatar.

Five plus two amazing artworks on two spectacular buildings in Qatar: the Ministry of Interior and the National Archive. 205 people worked on the study, preparation, and execution of the project. A wide variety of video artists, video programmers, IT specialists, audio specialists, and production people worked for 2 months to make this fantastic production happen.

The Ministry of Interior projection mapping installation consisted of 40 latest generation 32k and 40k lumen 4K resolution projectors. This created a total of 14080000 lux. The total addressable pixel resolution of the installation was a whopping 369 million pixels!

To ensure the best possible experience, the audio system had to be the best. 5 LA acoustics line array systems produced more than 120dB at a distance of 200 meters and crossing the busy street in front of the Ministry.
The NA projection mapping installation consisted of 30 latest generation 35k lumen 4K resolution projectors, while for the audio, 2LA acoustics line array systems produced more than 120dB at a distance of 120 meters.
To have the best possible redundant system, all projectors were installed in air-conditioned projection containers. To ensure safe operation, all power installations, projectors, and servers were set up to be redundant.

Mitsubishi Engineering-Plastics Corporation exhibited a collection featuring a new material of sophisticated polycarbonate resin developed by the company at Milan Design Week 2022 from June 6 (Mon) to 12 (Sun). The exhibition showcased a material table KONOHA (*1), a wearable material sample GEKKA, and a color sample KIHANA (*2), designed by STUDIO BYCOLOR, whose work draws out the authenticity of colors and the essence of materials.
This innovative material can retain its durability while applying colors, such as pearl, lamé, and other luminous elements, to the base material through exclusive technology. FLIGHTGRAF took part in creating the animation footage used in this exhibition.
This collection is a communication tool developed to communicate the fascination of the material to everyone engaged in the design industry. Furthermore, it is a material with futuristic potential for reducing CO2 and VOC emissions by eliminating the painting process that is conventionally required. It has received numerous design awards and is drawing attention from worldwide audiences as an outstanding commodity.
The installation ‘FOR / PRO / DUCT’ examines the future of manufacturing and designing from the foundation (=materials) at Gallery Rossana Orlandi, home of the “Guilt-less Plastic” activity at Milan Design Week. We hope that you will experience a sense of innovative technology designed to address future directions in the long history of design through this installation.

※1 MATERIAL TABLE is a collective name for material samples for which STUDIO BYCOLOR has applied for a trademark in Japan.
※2 KONOHA, GEKKA and KIHANA are trademarks applied for by Mitsubishi Engineering-Plastics Corporation throughout Europe, the U.S., China and Japan.

We created immersive background visuals for the opening ceremony of MIRAIKEN studio, a next-generation entertainment hub developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment within their R&D facility in Tokyo.
The studio features a 4-sided LED display environment capable of volumetric visual expression. Our work focused on designing layered, spatially dynamic visuals that extended the sense of depth across the stage, enhancing the integration between the physical performance and the surrounding digital space.
The event featured a collaboration with Bandai Namco’s iconic IP PAC-MAN, blending nostalgic game culture with cutting-edge LED technology and real-time performance.
