Signal Festival 2023

The sea is the storehouse of carbon dioxide. It is said that the basic foundation of the ecological house is phytoplankton.  For instance, a dead whale can nourish various kinds of creatures for a hundred years, of which phytoplankton are born, and then they absorb carbon dioxide that had been welded into the sea.

Thanks to the invisible boon of the seemingly unconnected incidence deep in the sea, we can sustain our life.  Whether or not we are aware of this graceful gift, we are all stringed with a cord of life.  This connection is not limited in the environmental world.  Just as the people here were once connected through the language and the rituals, today we are here woven together through sound and light.  In our artwork today, we try to describe the connection of the environment and people as a line, and it is transformed into a circle, and then the whole resonates in the Echo from the invisible boon.  We would like each and every person in the audience to feel they are part of the necessary life-line of the ecosystem.

Particles and Line – 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku

Particle and Line

Role

Production concept, art direction , design and animation

The 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku

We took charge of creating an artwork for Vision in the main lounge of “the 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku”.

This artwork came into being as the self-inspired one out of the artwork presented at Genius Loci in 2021.  The work, “Rhythm And Line,” in 2021 was the one projection-mapped to Franz Liszt’s residence out of respect for this great Magician of Piano.  Just as Liszt fanned a fresh breeze into the then world of music, our work this time is the updated “Rhythm and Line” dedicated to Sakamoto Ryuichi, who was also the musician that stirred up a fresh wind in the modern music world.

In 109 Cinemas Premium Shinjuku, there is provided a lounge special use for viewers an hour before the movie begins.  Its design theme is TIMELESS MODERN to let you enjoy that “moment” and that “sound.”  In the comfortably subdued atmosphere, the 9th and 10th floors will provide you with spacious room studded with intriguing items and impressive artworks invoking the hue of the town of Kabuki-cho in Shinjuku.  The picture content of the Vision in the center of the main lounge will immerse you in the felicity to let you flow in the unhurried time and a fondness for sound, and it was selected as well as to harmonize with the music in the main lounge, “109 Shinjuku-Lounge,” which was composed by Sakamoto Ryuichi ( with the co-composer, Marcus Fisher ).

“TIMELESS MODERN”

Qatar 2022

The theme of the show is guiding lights and navigation. Nomadic people of the Qatari region used the stars as a tool to navigate at night – the Middle East is the birthplace of astronomy. A falcon made of constellations and stars flies above Qatar, eventually transforming into a football, and all the stars are descending on Qatar and the Lusail Stadium – an allegory for one of the most important sports events of the world travelling to the Middle East for the first time, and the story of teams and fans finding their way to Qatar.

Five plus two amazing artworks on two spectacular buildings in Qatar: the Ministry of Interior and the National Archive. 205 people worked on the study, preparation, and execution of the project. A wide variety of video artists, video programmers, IT specialists, audio specialists, and production people worked for 2 months to make this fantastic production happen.
The Ministry of Interior projection mapping installation consisted of 40 latest generation 32k and 40k lumen 4K resolution projectors. This created a total of 14080000 lux. The total addressable pixel resolution of the installation was a whopping 369 million pixels!
To ensure the best possible experience, the audio system had to be the best. 5 LA acoustics line array systems produced more than 120dB at a distance of 200 meters and crossing the busy street in front of the Ministry.
The NA projection mapping installation consisted of 30 latest generation 35k lumen 4K resolution projectors, while for the audio, 2LA acoustics line array systems produced more than 120dB at a distance of 120 meters.
To have the best possible redundant system, all projectors were installed in air-conditioned projection containers. To ensure safe operation, all power installations, projectors, and servers were set up to be redundant.

Some numbers:
Total technical crew: 205, approx. 1,000 m2 of fabric used, 200m fencing, 350m of yellow yack. More than 150+ permits, 2000+ of generator hours, 135,000+ liters of diesel, 4 TPS, 40+ ACs, 500m of power cables, 10+ km of data and video cables, 10 containers.
For the content part, 5 teams in 5 countries on 2 continents worked more than 10,000 hours to produce 7 artworks with 45 scenes, altogether 32 minutes of content, including 2 artworks of 7 minutes of the most creative, amazing stories for the Qatar National Day.
